Prof. Ruengpung Sutthent, M.D., Ph.D., Acting Vice President for Research, Mahidol University along with Assoc. Prof. Chanuantong Tanasugarn, Dean of Faculty of Public Health, Mahidol University and the QS Advisory Committee attended the QS Subject Focus Summit on Medicine which held during 16 – 18 October 2017 at KMU International Convention Centre, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan.
On October 16th, 2017 welcome reception hosted by Kaohsuing Medical University (KMU). Prof Chien-Jen Chen, Vice President, Taiwan has delivered the welcome address to the participants, then followed by Ms Mandy Mok, Chief Executive Officer, QS Asia, also gave the welcome. Next, Prof. Ching-Kuan Liu, KMU’s President presented the brief history and information of KMU and the keynote speech on Medical Frontiers and Missions on Higher Education, which focusing on
1) The changing role of medical education
2) Social responsibilities
3) Featured research fields including environment health, tropical medicine, pharmacology & toxicology, natural products, and clinical medicine
4) Academia-industrial collaboration.
On 17th October, the morning session was entitled “Balancing Research, Training and Patient Care”. Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong, was the first presenter on ‘130 Years of Medicine in Hong Kong’ – sharing the best practices in the faculty’s management, the development of medical curriculum, allocation of funding for academic services and research. Secondly, Professor Shang-Jyh Hwang, Vice Superintendent, Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, presented on ‘Measuring Quality of Care in Patient-centered Integrated Care’ – sharing the successfulness of the 5-years chronic kidney disease prevention and the quality of care improvement project in Taiwan. Next, Prof. Luis Collado Yurrita, Director, Department of Medicine Complutense, University of Madrid, Spain, presented on ‘Patient-centered Medical Education – focusing on understanding of the patient, learning how to improve the relationship between doctor and patient, learning the adequate use of resources and time. Prof. Dato’ Dr Abdul Jalil Nordin, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia, presented on ‘Translating Basic Medical Science into Evidence Based Medicine in The Medical Curriculum of the 21st Century – focusing on the challenges in changing of the pre-medical course requirements to knowledge requirements.
The afternoon session was entitled on “The Medical Curriculum of the 21st Century”. Prof. Vincent Emery, Senior Vice-President for Global Strategy and Engagement, University of Surrey, UK, started the presentation on ‘Digital Doctors for the World of Tomorrow’, and followed by the presentation on ‘Contributions of Distributed Medical Education’ by Prof. Roger Y.M. Wong, Executive Associate Dean for Education, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia, Canada. Next, Prof. Yen-Ping Kuo, Assistant Dean for Curriculum, School of Osteopathic Medicine Campbell University, USA, presented on ‘Transforming Medical Education with Innovative, Integrated Curricula’. Then, there were the presentation on ‘Reform into Competency-based Curriculum in Medical Education in South Korea.
On 18 October, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chanuantong Thanasukarn represented on behalf of Mahidol University on the Health Literate Faculty : Social and Innovation Approach.
