Associate Professor Dr Mathuros Tipayamongkholgul, Deputy Dean for International Relations and Networking and Ms Chenchira Nathathong, Head of International Relations and Networking Unit, FPH-MU attended the opening ceremony of the 10th International Conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Countries hosted by Kunming Medical University, PR China 2 to 3 November 2018.

The theme of the conference, “Health Equity and Response to Crisis”, will bring together health personnel, academicians and researchers from GMS countries to share their expertise, experiences and research findings on a common platform that can strengthen public health actions, academic and research collaboration within and beyond the region.
The Network’s members include eight institutions in Thailand and one institution each in China, Lao PDR, eight in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar.
The Conference topics comprise health equity, community health, noncommunicable diseases, surveillance and control, health policy and management, human resources for health and public health education reform.
The Conference objectives comprise 1) providing a significant opportunity for all partners who work on the health related fields to share and discuss on their ideas, experience, and lessons on health improvement and development within the region, 2) enhancing the capacity and sustainability of public health collaboration among GMS countries, 3) strengthen the cooperation of education, research and policy advocacy among Sub-regional countries and 4) providing a platform for young faculties and students sharing their academic works among an encouraging environment.
The GMS Public Health Academic Network was officially established in Kunming in 2012 based on the foundation set by the Khon Kaen University (Thailand) and Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Vietnam) a few years earlier. Their vision is to achieve the highest possible level of health among the people and promote health equity in the GMS countries.
The Network has the mission to enhance regional capacity to address major public health challenges through the delivery of education, research, and policy advocacy for the improvement of population health and for health equity in the region.
The Network’s three objectives consist of: 1) enhancing the quality and relevance of educational and training programs in public health in the GMS through the reform of public health education to match the needs and the challenges of the health systems; 2) strengthening the collaboration and partnership of the public health institutions in the GMS through the development and implementation of quality teaching, research, and policy advocacy and 3) fostering collaborative actions among existing networks, policymakers, and researchers with interest in health policy and health research.
