On February 6, 2025, Assoc. Prof. Nopraenue Sajjarax Dhirathiti, Ph.D., Vice President for Global Partnerships and University Council, Mahidol University, presided over the opening ceremony of the “University Seminar Discussion Forum: Shaping Public Perception on Migration” — a side event of the Second Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Implementation of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) & Stakeholder Forum and Student Event, which took place at Room 323, Mahidol Learning Center (MLC), Mahidol University, Salaya Campus, ran parallel to the onsite event at UNESCAP, and via the Zoom Meeting platform.
During the event, Assoc. Prof. Sudarat Musikawong, Ph.D., Lecturer, Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University, moderated a discussion with students on the role of xenophobia, media for youth. The forum was attended by faculty members and students of Mahidol University, along with Ms. Sawinee Sachdev, from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), presented on the Global Compact for Migration in Thailand. The Mahidol session joined the UNESCAP session, in which Asst. Prof. Malee Sunpuwan, Ph.D., Lecturer, Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University, Mr. Panu Wongcha-Um, from Reuters, Mr. Siwawong Sooktawee, from Thailand Migration Reform Consortium (TMR), and Mr. Thura Win, a student of Mahidol University, shared their views.
The forum was organized in partnership with Mahidol University, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Thai Migration Reform Network (TMR) serving as key hosts. The forum aimed to raise awareness of the critical role media plays in shaping public perceptions of migration, emphasizing the protection and promotion of migrants’ rights in alignment with the objectives of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM). The forum also served as a platform for discussions on collaborative strategies and best practices for delivering accurate, ethical, and appropriate information on migration.
