The Tourism and Hospitality Management Division (THM), Mahidol University International College (MUIC), together with World Women Tourism (WWT) – an organization connecting women tourism professionals, Griffith Institute for Tourism, Griffith University, Australia and Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), Thailand, hosted a Glocal Webinar Series (GWS) – Thailand session on December 15, 2020 at 10:00-11:30 am, with an aim to inspire and share information with Thai women in the tourism and hospitality industry impacted by COVID-19.

The GWS aims to support women in the tourism industry so that they may better approach the new disruptions that challenge their personal and professional lives as women play a crucial role in the tourism industry in fulfilling essential jobs, in running tourism businesses, and in their roles as decision-makers.

In the webinars Thailand series, four tourism academics and practitioners from different leading organizations shared insights on the approaches and responses to address the COVID-19 challenges and how to increase women capabilities and capacities through skills development, education, and training. The panel included Dr. Barkathunnisha, Founder & Director of World Women Tourism; Dr. Catheryn Khoo, Associate Professor at Griffith University, International Gender & Tourism Expert and Asia Pacific Consultant to UNWTO on Women in Tourism; Ms. Watcharee Churugsa, Assistant of Director General of DASTA; and Dr. Walanchalee Wattanacharoensil, Assistant Professor at Tourism and Hospitality Management Division, Mahidol University International College.

This webinar Thailand’s session is amongst the Glocal Webinar Series (GWS) which have been taking place in different countries in the month of December, for instance in Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bhutan where tourism has contributed a great deal to the country’s economy. Each session was country-specific and talked directly about the issues and challenges for women in their respective regions, therefore combining global and local strategies to create a ‘Glocal’ mission.

The Tourism and Hospitality Management Division of Mahidol University International College is the first and a leading international tourism and hospitality program in Thailand. Its undergraduate program is the first in Thailand to receive double quality awards in international hospitality education from ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA), and TedQual certificate by United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
