Mahidol University improves the curriculum quality to reach ASEAN standards and reveals 7 AUN-QA quality courses.

On February 20, 2019, Professor Banchong Mahaisavariya, M.D. Acting President of Mahidol University, together with Associate Professor Dr. Nantana Gajaseni, Acting Chairperson of AUN- QA Council, announced the results of the AUN-QA program assessment at IT426 meeting room, 4th floor, Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, Mahidol University, Salaya campus.

Associate Professor Dr. Nantana Gajaseni, Acting Chairperson of AUN-QA Council said the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) has been developed and regionally accepted after its first operation in 1998 as a quality assurance mechanism in education and curriculum standardization for member universities. Currently, there are 30 main member universities and 74 associate members from 10 ASEAN countries. All use the same guidelines on educational quality assurance in order to get successful in further co-activities, either transferring students or comparing credits. This would be necessary to create a common standard to strengthen higher-level education curricula in the region. Each AUN-QA quality assurance is valid for 5 years to allow any revision to meet latest standards.

Professor Banchong Mahaisavariya, M.D. Acting President of Mahidol University said that all higher education institutions must adapt to changes in local labor market and global society by creating proficient and innovative human resources to meet the labor market demand at ASEAN and international levels. To manage such challenges, education quality assurance is believed to be an important and useful tool for maintaining and upgrading the educational management to international quality standards. Mahidol University has thus continuously focused on quality assurance, both internal quality assurance (IQA) and external quality assurance (EQA). Especially in curriculum implementation, the university uses the Outcome Based Education approach, the quality assurance criteria of the ASEAN University Network (AUN-QA) as well as other benchmarks specific for each field, such as WFME, AACSB, ABET, MUSIQUE, TedQual, etc.

The curriculum accreditation by AUN-QA is an important step for it demonstrates the potential of the university in bringing Thai education to international recognition and strengthening the ability to compete internationally in order to become a world-class university.

In 2018, seven courses of Mahidol University have been certified for curriculum quality from 2 assessments:

  1. Three courses from the 103th Program Assessment, February 6-8, 2018:
  2. Doctor of Philosophy Program in Biochemistry (International Program), Faculty of Science
  3. Bachelor of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine Program, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital
  4. Bachelor of Business Administration Program in International Hospitality Management (International Program), Mahidol University International College
  5. Four courses from the 121st Program Assessment, September 25-27, 2018:
  6. Bachelor of Science Program in Occupational Therapy, Faculty of Physical Therapy
  7. Bachelor of Technology Program in Medical Educational Technology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital
  8. Bachelor of Nursing Science, School of Nursing Ramathibodi, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital
  9. Doctor of Philosophy Program in Clinical Epidemiology (International Program)

All along, every unit of the university has jointly developed teaching and learning that focuses on results, or Outcome-based Education, and the learner-centered concept to promote graduates’ professional skills (deep knowledge) and work and life skills (broad knowledge) as well as the potential for future social needs as talented citizens who can compete on a global level. In addition to teaching and learning, assessment according to expected learning outcomes has taken an essential role, with introduction of AUN-QA as a tool for continuous quality improvement.
