USGS – National Wildlife Health Center and Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University held a workshop on General Surveillance for Wildlife Diseases and Outbreak Investigation

On 30 May, 2022, Associate Professor Dr. Walasinee Sakcamdurng, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University, delivered the welcome and opening remarks to the participants of the workshop on “General Surveillance for Wildlife Diseases and Outbreak Investigation”, at Holiday Inn Pattaya, Chonburi, Thailand.

The welcome and opening remarks by Dean Walasinee, then, was followed by the welcome speech by Dr.Supalak Prajan, the representative from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation; Dr.Sumana Kajornwattanakul, the Director of Marine and Coastal Research and Development Institute; Assistant Professor Dr.Khongsak Thiangtum, President of Thailand Veterinary Dean Consortium; and Associate Professor Dr.Parntep Ratanakorn, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Applied Zoology, HRH Princess Chulabhorn Royal Academy.

The workshop was held from 30 May to 2 June, 2022, and co-organized by the United States Geological Survey- National Wildlife Health Center (USGS-NWHC), Thailand – National Wildlife Health Center (Thailand – NWHC)/the Monitoring and Surveillance Center for Zoonotic Diseases in Wildlife and Exotic Animals (MoZWE), Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University, with the support from World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH – founded as OIE), Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative, and Wildlife Conservation Society.

This workshop was honored to have Dr. Jonathan Sleeman, Center Director of the USGS-NWHC, Dr. LeAnn White, Deputy Center Director, and Dr. Daniel Walsh, USGS Montana Cooperative Research Unit, to be the speakers.  The participants of the workshop were  the personnel from core agencies of the network partners in Thailand and abroad, including the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Department of Livestock Development, Department of Disease Control, the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand, the academia (HRH Princess Chulabhorn Royal Academy, Chiang Mai University, Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-Ok, Faculty of Environmental and Resource Studies, Mahidol University), and international partners such as Health Security Partners, Wildlife Conservation Society (Laos), and National Animal Health Laboratory Centre, Department of Livestock and Fisheries (Laos).Representatives from the Embassy of the United States in Bangkok and the USAID also participated at the event to observe the workshop.

This workshop is one of the series of activities initiated by the OIE (WOAH) Twinning Agreement between the USGS-NWHC, Thailand-NWHC,MoZWE, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University.  The workshop’s priority was to co-create the general wildlife disease surveillance system and data-management and sharing platform for Thailand.  The outcomes from the workshop will be used to guide the establishment of general wildlife disease surveillance protocols and the interoperable data-sharing system and to enhance the workforce’s capacity for disease detection in wildlife.
