Mahidol University in Cooperation with Nakhon Pathom Province Launched Development Project “Nakhon Pathom Province: Creative City of Music” – Preparing to be a Network of UNESCO Creative City for Tourism Industry Sustainable Development Regarding Culture, Art, and Music

On March 25, 2021, Mahidol University together with Nakhon Pathom Province launched the development project called ‘Nakhon Pathom Province: Creative City of Music’. Mr. Surasak Charoensirichot, Governor of Nakhon Pathom Province, along with Prof. Banchong Mahaisavariya, M.D., President of Mahidol University, Mr. Jirawat Sasomsub, Chief executive of Nakhon Pathom Provincial Administration Organization, Dr. Narong Prangcharoen, Dean of College of Music, Mahidol University, and Mr. Pichit Virankabutra, Director of Creative City Development, Creative Economy Agency (Public Organization), made the statement to the press. The representatives from 14 allies, both public and private sectors, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the collaboration to progress Nakhon Pathom Province to be a network of UNESCO Creative City of Music at Prince Mahidol Hall, Mahidol University, Salaya Campus.

The development project called ‘Nakhon Pathom Province: UNESCO Creative City of Music’ has been proceeding since 2020. The potentiality assessment of Nakhon Pathom Province has been conducted to evaluate the preparedness to be a part of the network by considering several aspects which consists of historical factors; culture and tradition, inherited folk recreations, folk song -Lam Tad – artists, and artist clan founded in the reign of King Rama III, and modern factors; three globally recognized music colleges of three educational institutions, construction – Mahidol University’s Prince Mahidol Hall with excellent acoustic -, the number of music activity throughout the year; several international and national music fairs, music activities for learning about cultures, music as extracurricular activities, music activities for elderly health promotion, and music therapy for youth. These factors show the readiness and capability of Nakhon Pathom Province to achieve the goal and develop Thai Creative Industry of Music for international competition.

According to the results of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, Mahidol University ranked No.1 not only in Life Sciences & Medicine, but also in Performing Arts, which was the first time ranked in top 100, #51-100. The results were from an internationally recognized music reputation evaluation. These indicated that Mahidol University is one of the leading universities in the world with strong expertise in various subjects. The collaboration between Mahidol University and Nakhon Pathom Province to progress this project is the integration of academic part from Mahidol University and culture part from Nakhon Pathom Province to achieve mutual goals and objectives.

Moreover, if Nakhon Pathom Province achieve the goal and become a Creative City network this year, the knowledge exchanges will occur. Prince Mahidol Hall will be a music activities center of Nakhon Pathom Province and also Thailand. Besides, Nakhon Pathom Province will be the hub of products and services in the Creative Industry of Music, and that will increase the competitive potential of Thailand’s Music Industry for international contests.
